Trivia
- Celtic had progressed to this semi-final after defeating Rangers which required a replay and an extra-time last minute goal.
- The BIG attraction of the Glasgow Cup this year was that the winner would go forward as a Scottish representative towards the Fairs Cities Cup and look forward to European football the following season.
- This tie was played on a Monday night with a 7:30pm kick off. The tie had been brought forward by a day to allow selected players time to prepare for the Scotland U23 international. Celtic had asked the SFA for permission to release Billy McNeill, John Divers and Bobby Jeffrey from joining up with the U23s for training in Stonehaven. The SFA had denied Celtic this permission, despite allowing two other Scotland U23s who played for Aston Villa to play on this Monday night in England. All were missing from this game – Divers because he was injured.
- John McNamee came in for Billy McNeill; Frank Brogan came in for Bobby Jeffrey and a fit-again John Hughes returned for John Divers. Partick Thistle played an unchanged side from the one that had defeated Celtic at Celtic Park two weekends back. Thistle had gone 9 games in a row without defeat.
- The other semi-final was between Third Lanark and Clyde.
- The winners progressed to the final at Hampden on Christmas Eve
Review
This was a win inspired by the returned John Hughes who ran and chased for everything at centre forward. Frank Brogan also brought a touch of class and fancy footwork to the left wing. The weakness of Thistle’s tactics was shown up in this game. Their long ball and hit-and-hope failed to make little impact against an enthusiastic Celtic performance. In goal Frank Haffey also had an inspired game making some class saves in both halfs. And John McNamee was a fine stand-in for the absent McNeill.
