Trivia

  • The Scottish League, in response to the dramatic winter weather earlier in the season and the resulting fixture congestion, extended the season until 18th May..
  • Dundee had yet to win in Glasgow this season and much was hoped for Celtic in this game against the European Cup semi-finalists.
  • Murdoch and Hughes were both fit again and came in for Gallacher and Chalmers.

Outside of football, the Profumo scandal broke in the papers. John Profumo, Conservative Minister of War was linked to Christine Keeler, a call girl who was wanted in connection with the shooting of Stephen Ward. Profumo had been conducting an affair with Keeler, who was also in a liaison with the Soviet Naval attache to the London Embassy. Profumo was called to the House of Commons to make a statement. He was later sacked not because of the affair, but because it became evident that he had lied to the House.

Review

For the first 20 minutes it was all Dundee, but they appeared to be suffering from Celtic's perennial disease of nae shooting boots on – and when they did shoot it was invariably wayward or Haffey was to hand. On 20 minutes John Hughes beat Ure, considered one of the best centre half in Scotland, with ease and let fly with a shot that saw Celtic take the lead. From that point the game was Celtic's. Dundee for all their flair could not be direct whilst Celtic played intelligently. Brogan added a second, a header from a Craig corner and five minutes later a Brogan shot was deflected by Seith past Slater for a third. Gilzean pulled one back for Dundee but Craig added a fourth goal before the end.
