Trivia

  • The six first team regulars that missed the hammering administered by Kilmarnock to the very inexperienced team were all on the mend. In fact they all made it back for this, the quarter final Cup game against St Mirren. Back in came Haffey, McNamee, McNeill, Murdoch, Hughes and Divers. Bobby Craig was dropped from the side.

Review

Gates opened at 1:30pm for this game which was set to be a full ground and a close match. Dick Beattie, the ex-Celt and St Mirren captain and goalkeeper was in trouble with Tiny Wharton even before kick off for drawing a line with his boot from the penalty spot to the centre of the goal line.
Celtic started in a rush and Beattie had to save at Brogan's feet and then beat away a Chalmers shot. But in the eigth minute a McNamee free kick ended in a goal mouth scrimmage with the ball breaking to Brogan who shot through a forest of legs to score in the corner of the goal. Hughes had a goal chalked off three minutes later for offside. With Celtic making all the running they had a penalty turned down by referee Wharton. Hughes was in the thick of it and clashes were occurring all round the park between the players.
The incidents seemed to multiply in a more sleekit way in the second half. Hughes was felled in an off the ball incident which Tiny chose to ignore even after consulting the linesman. As the second half progressed Wharton spent more time stopping and lecturing players than chasing the game. Clunie and Hughes were getting tore in to each other as much as the game and in the 63rd minute Hughes was led to the dressing room with an obvious thigh injury administered on the side by the St Mirren centre half. With Celtic down to 10 men, ex-Celt Bobby Carroll missed a sitter for St Mirren and McNamee turned out to be Celtic's enforcer. St Mirren threw everything at 10-man Celtic in the final 15 minutes but the Bhoys stood firm to go on to the semi-final.
