Trivia
- John Hughes, who had been out since the St Mirren game at the end of March with a leg muscle injury was making good progress and reports said that he would be back for this game. In fact he played for the Reserves at Cathkin against Thirds Reserves on the Friday night.
- On Monday 15th Celtic Reserves lost 2-0 to Rangers Reserves in the Reserve League Cup played at Celtic Park. A crowd of 19,000 watched Alec Byrne misfire for Celtic at centre forward. John Fallon was in goal and by all accounts Jimmy Johnstone had a game and a half and Sam Henderson at right half was also singled out for praise.
- Celtic had been due to play Clyde on the Wednesday 17th night but the game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch after torrential rain in Glasgow. On the same Wednesday night Rangers defeated Partick Thistle at Firhill thus assuring them of the League title for another year. This meant that Celtic would definetly play in the European Cup Winners Cup next season whatever the result of the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden on the 5th May.
- Bobby Craig was restored to the starting line-up with Murdoch slipping over to inside left.
Review
As the season dragged on to its conclusion Celtic appeared to get worse and not better. Despite the win this was a poor performance from Celtic – and with a Scottish Cup Final to look forwqard to, better things should have been expected from this team. The supporters knew it – and the team were roundly boo-ed for their performance in this game.
This was an undistinguished game played in a high wind which affected the play. Third Lanark were safe from relegation and Celtic could not win the League with Rangers win on Wednesday night. Celtic had three times the scoring chance that Third Lanark had. Bobby Craig's first goal came from a deflected shot which beat Robertson. His second was shot home with Robertson blinded. In between Cunningham scored for Third's with the Celtic defense asleep.
