Trivia
- The third game against Rangers this season, and three defeats for Celtic.
- Various proposals had been discussed to avoid the crowd disturbances seen at the last Rangers – Celtic game when 34 had been arrested predominantly out of the Celtic end. A meeting was held at the City Chambers between the Lord Provost, the Glasgow senior magistrate, the Glasgow police Chief Constable, Robert Kelly – chairman of Celtic, and John Lawrence chairman of Rangers. It was decided to cut the half time interval down from ten minutes to five, and in that time to stage a cycle pursuit race around the perimeter running track at Ibrox. Also stewards would be placed on all turnstiles with the right to bar entrance to any person.
- The half back line was tinkered with again. This time Willie O'Neill came in at left half with Billy Price dropping out. And more forward tinkering showed a start for Bobby Lennox at outside right and Frank Brogan back at outside left. An unchanged team for Rangers.
Review
The Celtic end was 3/4's empty fifteen minutes before kick off. The absent supporters missed the best show that Celtic had put up so far with a spirited performance particularly in the first half. Leading the fight from the front as ever was Steve Chalmers who was becoming Celtic's most effective performer. He got the opener after the ball had been moved on and crossed by MacKay and Turner. Rangers were still dangerous on the break and McNeill was doubly alert to counteract these attacks and with the full backs in good form and Haffey doing his cat impersonations in goal the teams went in at half time with Celtic in front.
Rangers came out looking to assert themselves with the wind in their favour. Haffey made more great saves but was powerless to stop a good move between Forrest and McLean. At 1-1 there was still everything to play for and this time Celtic did not flag or buckle under. Both goalkeepers were busy. In another good move again orchestrated by Forrest Brand got a second goal for Rangers. And thats how it finished. A much better performance from Celtic but still not enough to beat a very good Rangers side.
