Trivia
- Celtic came into the game in their best position in the League for some time at third just behind Rangers. Rangers however had the hex on Celtic with 2-1, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 1-1 and 4-0 from their last six encounters. Celtic too were on a run not having lost since the end of September.
- Celtic went with what had been their strongest side – unchanged from the last two games. Rangers had the return of Jim Baxter at left half, who had been out injured and in plaster for some time.
Review
This was a snatched victory for Rangers and against the run of play in the game. Celtic had plenty of chances but a lot of bad luck and Ritchie in the Rangers goal to contend with. Celtic should have put them away but failed to get the ball in the net. Jimmy Johnstone had a great game for Celtic. Fallon had scarcely one save to make other than the one that passed him from Millar – it was Millar's first goal of the season – coming from a free kick from Henderson after he was brought down by Jim Kennedy. Celtic had an out-and-out claim for a penalty in the 20th minute when Chalmers was brought down in the area by McKinnon. The only man in the ground that didn't think it was a penalty was Referee Syme, and he was the one that counted.
