Trivia
- In the draw for the next round Celtic were drawn away to Morton a Cappielow. Morton had made big progress this and last season and were top of Division 2.
- Also during the week Rangers lost their Glasgow Cup semi final against Clyde 1-0. Celtic still had to replay their drawn semi against Third Lanark.
- Bobby Murdoch and John Divers were both back in training. Frank Haffey had finally had his plaster removed and given the all-clear by the hospital to start training again. With them both fit Paddy Turner and Charlie Gallacher dropped out and Celtic fielded their strongest team.
- For St Mirren ex-Celt in goal Beattie had not long returned from breaking his ankle, and up front Bobby Carroll was still playing.
- The ground though protected with a straw blanket was hard and showed white frost patches in places.
- This was a notedly niggling match with quite a few personal battles going on and a number of 'off-the-balls' as well as disputes between the referee and players. Clark opf St Mirren was sent off and Hughes was booked.
Review
Chalmers missed an early open goal as did Hughes who replaced him in the centre. On ten minutes Divers gave a diamond pass to Chalmers and Stevie fired home. St Mirren's response barely got off the ground. St Mirren had Clark sent off for wreckless behaviour when he piled into Hughes who was on the ground and a "rugby style scrum" ensued". St Mirren played the remainder of the first half and the whole of the second with 10 men.
In the second half it was a return to the familiar ground of Celtic having lots of chances but failing to convert any. The game was generally very niggley with both sides having chips at each other. Fifteen minutes from time Jinky hit a lob from Divers home on the volley. And just before the whistle Divers himself scored.
