Trivia
- Celtic made an audacious bid to sign Alfredo di Stefano from Real Madrid. Real Madrid had released him at the end of last season. After attempts to contact him by phone and telegram, Jimmy McGrory flew to Spain with centre half John Cushley as interpreter. As they boarded the plane they were told that di Stefano had signed for Espanyol.
- Its not fully clear whether Celtic made a bid for Joe McBride after the bid for di Stefano fell through. Joe was at that time playing for Motherwell. Celtic had first encountered him in the mid 50's when playing for Kilmarnock. He had since had spells at Wolves, Luton Town and Partick Thistle. At the start of this season he had first refused to re-sign for Motherwell saying the terms were too low. Then he had signed 'under duress' saying that he did so with the belief that Motherwell would consider offers for him. Chairman Robert Kelly stated to the press that Celtic were not in trhe habit of encroaching on other clubs contracted players.
- At left half in for Jim Kennedy came Jim Brogan. Kennedy had been carrying a leg injury since the Glasgow Charity match between Glasgow Select and Tottenham Hotspur and had aggravated the injury against Partick Thistle. Jim Brogan had been a late re-signing to contract this season and his brother Frank had just departed for Ipswich Town.
Review
Described as a 'hard but undistinguished match' Celtic got the luck of the game when Cumming was injured for Hearts and had to go off and when he came back on was effectively walking wounded and Hearts playing with 10 men. Chalmers scored the goal of the game on 59 minutes. The penalty was awarded when Murdoch was pulled down by Holt.
