Trivia

  • The bid for di Stefano finally fell through. Though manager McGrory and translator John Cushley had gone to Spain to try and win him over it is likely that they never actually had a face-to-face meeting with him although they did apparently communicate by phone. A telegram was received at Celtic Park when McGrory was in Spain saying that he could not accept Celtic’s offer (which was unknown at the time) and that in any case he was to sign for Espanyol.
  • Willie Waddell of Kilmarnock was having a hard time with Press, supporters of the Ayrshire side and even some of his own players by adopting a 4-2-4 team strategy in the opening games of this season – one of the first Scottish managers to consider a different plan from what had been a standard 2-3-5 approach.
  • Jim Kennedy had not recovered sufficiently from his shin injury and Jim Brogan continued at left half.
  • The A Reserves played in the Reserve League Cup with Haffey, MacKay, O’Neill, Henderson, Cushley, Cattanach, Hughes, Curley, Spencer, Divers, Taylor. They lost 3-1 to Killie Reserves.

Review

As suggested Kilmarnock set out to play 4-2-4 from the start which should have been a strong defensive set up. Their setup initially had the Celtic defenders and half backs wondering who to pick up but once Clark and Brogan got the measure of Killie, then the Bhoys began to flow. This was not before one or two scares and Fallon had to be alert. It took till the 42nd minute but Charlie Gallacher breached their defensive wall and Celtic went in ahead at the break.
Charlie Gallacher missed a penalty at the start of the second half. Killie had reverted to a standard formation and they won an equaliser but were level for only a minute before Gallacher got Celtic’s second. Chalmers and Johnstone then added two further goals to add insult to injury. This was a win for doing the easy things simply as emphasised by Stevie Chalmers goal which was a top corner from the edge of the box shot.
