Review
The English referee Ernie Crawford struggled to control the ill disciplined Portuguese players who showed a 'disgraceful display of ill temper'.
In 14 minutes Chalmers scored a spectacular header from Johnstone's cross and shortly after Johnstone had too be retsrained by his own players after several rough tackles on him.
In 60 minutes Celtic were awarded a penalty after a 'judo' challenge from a Leixoes defender. The Portuguese players pushed and jostled the referee who was required to go to the touch line to inform the interpreter that he would abandon the game if Lexoies players did not stop their antics. It took nearly four minutes to take the spot kick and as it was Murdoch's penalty was poor and Rosas saved easily.
Chalmers scored a fine second after he had neaten defender Moreira and Murdoch scored a penalty after Chalmers had been fouled in teh area.
Three Lexoies players limped off at the end theatrically as Parkhead resounded to the sound of boos and jeers as they left the field.
After the match Leixoes players apologised to the referee.
Charlie Gallacher could not resume after the restart with an ankle injury and Celtic did well when reduced to ten men.
