Trivia
- Celtic released Joe Haverty and he returned to Millwall. Sean Fallon had travelled to Ireland to watch him play in the Eire international and after the game he delivered the news that Celtic would release him. The likelihood is that celtic probably felt they had enough cover in the outside left position and that Haverty offered nothing different to what they already had.
- John Clark was out and in came Jim Brogan. Charlie Gallacher was again fit and restored to inside left with Lennox at outside left. John Hughes missed out with an injured ankle (allegedly).
- On the day before the game Kilmarnock manager and ex-Ranger Willie Waddell tendered his resignation for the end of the season from Kilmarnock. There was much speculatiion that he was about to take over as Scotland manager. Kilmarnock were top of the league and continuing to play a 4-2-4 system.
Review
A great disappointment and a wrong tactical move after the loss in the League Cup final this was another blow to the club's esteem. Kilmarnock were quick to attack and solid in defense. The restored left side of Gallacher and Lennox nebver got going and Jimmy Johnstone had a hard tiime on the right. The Bhoys were 3-0 down at the end of the first half and conceded another two in the second before Gemmell found the net and Charlie Gallacher added another before the end, by which time Killie had taken their foot off the pedal.
