Trivia

  • Celtic started the game with a two goal dfeficit from the first leg. To advance clearly their forwards had to score and not be wasteful in front of goal. Chalmers and Young were finally given the all clear to play by the SFA in the fall out from their sending off in the first leg of the previous tie against Leixoes.
  • Chalmers himself had started training again after the leg injury that had kept him out of the Third Lanark game. Jim Kennedy and John Hughes who had picked up knocks in that game. Hughes looked OK but Jim Kennedy was struggling with an ankle knock. He failed a Fitness test and was replaced by Willie O'Neill
  • Chalmers carried off after 75 minutes and Celtic play last 15 with 10 men
  • Barcelona had 'speed on the ground, speed in the air and most importantly speed between the ears'.
  • Barcelona were knocked out in the next round by RC Strasbourg on the toss of a coin.

Review

Barcelona were far too sophisticated for Celtic and showed an abundance of class. At no time did it look like Celtic would make up the two goal deficit. The 35 year old Hungarian playmaker Koscis was the best player afield as he pulled the Barca strings in midfield.
The Spaniards used the open spaces to great effect and were always in control. Celtic were reduced to long range efforts from Murdoch and Gemmell and when Chalmers limped off in 75 minutes Celtic's game was as good as over. It was a sporting match marred only when Hughes shoulder charged keeper Sadurni.
