Trivia
- The draw had been made for the first round proper of the Scottish Cup. Celtic were drawn away to St Mirren.
- The football match fixing case south of the border finally came to court. Dick Beattie, the ex-Celtic and St Mirren goalkeeper was found guilty and sentenced to 9 months jail. Beattie actually stated that he received £200 from one game, £300 for another and a further £100 from a bookie.
- Celtic called a halt to the scouting in Ireland for the time. The players that they had been interested were goalkeeper Jack Kennedy of Distillery, and outside right Sean Dunlop of Coleraine
- The half back tinkering continued with Clark and Brogan switched for this game. Jimmy Johnstone found himself dropped to make way for the return of Steve Chalmers back from his ankle break.
Review
This was one of only four Division 1 games to go ahead. After the hay had been cleared from the ground it was clear that the pitch was going to cut up fast and was slippery and icy in places. It took some time for both sides to accustom themselves to the surface and with John Hughes playing in his white trainers beat four defenders to shoot and score from 20 yards out. His second came from a Bertie Auld pass and Auld converted a penalty before the break.
Hughes got his hatrick on 62 minutes. Murdoch added a fifth and Lennox a sixth before Hughes added two more to round off a thoroughly rampant Celtic.
Hardly a dynamic month of results for Celtic. One win, three losses and two draws saw them drop a place to sixth in the table with Rangers climbing above them. With a weather affected programme and teams with games in hand better was expected from Celtic in the coming months.
