- This was a Testimonial game for Nottingham Forest defender and Scot Robert McKinlay. Celtic had been invited south for the game at the start of the season.
- The Celtic party went south on the Thursday…. and spent the weekend taking in the England – Scotland international at Wembley before heading up to Nottingham. Billy McNeill played at centre half and captained Scotland in the 2-2 draw. McNeill injured his back during the Wembley game but was still set to play in the Testimonial.
- Bob McKinlay had come south to play for Forest 16 years before in 1949. His original club in Scotland had been Bowhill Rovers from Fife and this would be his 505th game for Forest.
- This was a chance for the Mochan brothers to meet up – Neil trainer with Celtic and his younger brother Denis who had come south from Raith Rovers to be the Forest left back.
- Substitutes were allowed in the game.
