Trivia
- This was the last League game of the season played on a Wednesday night. Kilmarnock had snatched the League Championship from Hearts with a thrilling 2-0 victory over them on Cup Final Saturday. Dunfermiline had also been contenders as had Hibernian earlier in the season, but all the east coasters challengers had fallen to the late surge from Kilmarnock.
- Jock Stein's first visit to his old club as Celtic manager was not a happy one as Celtic were well beaten by his old side. The Celtic team was not announced before the game but Stein did let on that there would be changes citing the game against Rangers in the Glasgow Cup to come, allowing some of the side a game off and a few niggle injuries to players.
- In their first ever ballot, the Scottish Football Writers Association named Billy McNeill as Footballer of the Year. Runner up was Frank Beattie, captain and left half of Kilmarnock (who had just lifted the League Championship after a tough battle at the top with Hearts)
- 45,000 spectators at Victoria Park, Stoke watched a farewell testimonial to Sir Stanley Matthews. Puskas, Di Stefano, Baxter, Yashin, Schnellinger and Greaves were among the International XI who paid homage to the master.
Review
Having won the Cup Final against them, the fates conspired to pit the two teams against each other in the League. Given the selections and changes in the Celtic team the likelihood is that Stein had his eye firmly set on the Glasgow Cup and saw this game as a diversion with nothing to play for. For Dunfermiline no doubt this victory was sweet.
