Trivia
- Jock Stein elects to have Celtic play with white socks rather than the traditional green. The strip is enormously popular amongst the fans and the legend of the Lisbon Lions has just started.
- Joe McBride was in training in an attempt to recover from the knee and ankle knock but was left out for this game. In came John Divers at inside left in place of Charlie Gallacher.
- Celtic awaited the arrival of two further Brazilians on trial – Jorge Farah, a half back and Fernando Consul. They were in Paris awaiting the completion of their registration forms.Celtic already had two Brazilian trialists at the club – di Sousa and Inacio, the latter of whom was said to be doing well.
- This night game had the teams playing with only two pylons of floodlights operating. This led to a somewhat gloomy atmosphere.
Review
Celtic were never in danger of losing the game but they came close to dropping a point and clearly missed McBride up front. Despite first half superiority they failed to find the net and McCloy in the Motherwell goal had an easy time. Thankfully Motherwell's goal scoring chances were just as woeful. In the second half Celtic upped the tempo and a goal resulted. Auld and Johnstone began to roam and Johnstone finally beat McCallum to send over a cross which Divers put away. Divers, a somewhat forgotten man at Celtic, played well. In the last minute of the game Motherwell's Andy Weir was taken off with a leg injury.
