Trivia

  • Joe McBride was finally fit and ready to play having fully recovered from the knee and ankle knocks he had sustained in the Friendly against Sunderland. Effectively Joe McBride's first team debut though he had played in the three pre-season Friendlies.
  • Celtic signed schoolboy international Henry Quinn from St Mirren on the 19th August.
  • Two further Brazilians arrived on trial – Jorge Farah, a half back and Fernando Consul. They had both been in Paris awaiting the completion of their registration forms.
  • When the second goal went in for Dundee this was the signal for a hail of beer cans to get thrown onto the park and the police waded into the stands. Celtic had already had two instances of hooligan behaviour this season – at Roker Park and at Tannadyce – and the Celtic View carried a warning to those that felt they could behave in a generally reckless manner.
  • It was the first day of the season south of the border and the first season that the English League allowed substitution during a game.

Review

Joe McBride did little to add to the tenacity of the forward line. Dundee won by taking their chances when they occurred. Celtic worked hard but misfired up front and failed to get the breaks when it mattered. Dundee's first goal came from a goalmouth stramash with Cameron slipping the ball through Fallon's fingers. Fifteen minutes from the end Cameron got a second from another goal mouth scramble.
