Trivia

  • For this game Hughes was moved across to centre forward with McBride out having picked up a leg knock against Dundee Utd; Charlie Gallacher coming in at outside left.

Review

This was a tough game with both sides aware of the implications of the result and both fighting for the win. Celtic looked to be cruising through until Murray popped up at the end but they only had a few more minutes to last out and Motherwell failed to find the third goal in the dying minutes. All of the Celtic side played well but John Hughes was a stand out. Celtic’s first goal came from a corner lobbed over by Gallacher. Hughes missed the ball but he had attracted all the attention of the defenders and when Chalmers knocked it back in Lennox had an easy job to score. Celtic then proceeded to pound the Motherwell defense with attack after attack but during this time Motherwell made a break and and Fallon let in a powerful shot from Delaney. Then followed the penalty incident. Lenox was penalised for crashing into the goalkeeper. The free kick was taken and the ball passed back to the goalkeeper who Lennox challenged again. However Mastt Thomson had taken on the role of enforcer and he flattened Lennox. Penalty! Hughes made no mistake with the spot kick and Fir Park was in uproar!
In the second half Tommy Gemmell added to the power of the front line getting forward at any and every opportunity offering up his might shots. and it was from one of his dribbles to the byline and chip backs that Lennox got his second and Celtic’s third goal. Motherwell fought back but could only get the one just before the end.
This was a well fought match. McCallum was booked late in the game for something he said to the referee.
