Trivia

  • Aarhus goalkeeper Bent Martin arrived at Celtic Park on a month's trial on the 3rd January.
  • A Benefit game for Jimmy Welsh between a Celtic side and a combined Airdrie – Albion Rovers side to be played at Broomfield was called off for the second time this month because of frozen ground. Another Friendly game against St Roch's at Barrowfield was also cancelled due to the freezing ground. Celtic Park itself had been protected for the Rangers game by a spread of 15 tons of hay over the surface but snow had fallen on this and compacted so that the ground had still partially frozen. As soon as a thaw set in around the 29th work began to clear the snow and straw to allow the ground open to the milder air from the thaw.
  • Celtic were having trouble arranging flights to Tbilisi in Georgia to play the second leg ECWC tie against Dynamo Kiev. Celtic wanted a jet to be able to fly directly to Georgia over Russian airspace rather than using coinventional flights to Aberdeen, London, Moscow then Tbilisi. Despite three telegrams the Ukrainians – then part of the USSR – had failed to respond. When they did respond it was to insist that Celtic travel by the conventional log way route which Celtic rejected. It looked as though the return leg set for 19th January would be delayed. In the end Celtic put the matter into the hands of the SFA and the European Union FA (as UEFA was then termed).
  • For this game in came Bobby Lennox and Bertie Auld for Charlie Gallacher and John Hughes. Played on a wet day at a muddy Shawfield.

Review

A one-sided game with Celtic dominant from the start. However it was Clyde that scored first and with a good goal Stewart making the opening and his pass finding Bryce who skipped around Simpson and passed into an open goal. After that the forward line went fully into attack mode supplied fulsomely by the half backs with |McBride, Lennoix and Chalmers peppering the Clyde goal with shots. McBride pulled two goals back one after the other, both headers, to make it 2-1 to Celtic at half time. It wasn't till ten minutes from time however that Celtic made it certain with a goal from Bobby Lennox finishing a move started by Tommy Gemmell.
