Review
This was a humiliating defeat for Rangers on their own patch. They had actually started well and Simpson was required to make a fine save from Johnston before diving bravely at the feet of Forrest.
Celtic got the break through in eight minutes when McNeill got the break of the ball inside the area and lashed the ball home from close range.
Lennox scored a magnificent second when he swerved past two defenders before firing a rising shot past Ritchie. Shortly after Murdoch’s header hit the bar.
In the second half Rangers fought bravely and McNeill had to clear from his line when a Smith cross had beaten Simpson.
Lennox’s pace had troubled Greig all night and in 81minutes he misjudged a through ball to allow the speedy Lennox in to finish. Lennox rounded off his hat trick a couple of minutes later with a fine low shot from the edge of the area after good work from Auld had set him up.
Celtic looked faster and sharper and Rangers sluggish in comparison. The movement of Celtic’s forward players was most impressive and Murdoch and Auld looked in control in the midfield.
Celtic’s supporters celebrated noisily at the end of the game.
