Trivia
- Ball boys paraded the newly won League Cup round the perimeter of the pitch before the game to loud roars from the appreciative Celtic fans.
- Celtic knew they would play European football next season – winning the League Cup automatically made them Scotland choice for the Fairs Cup.
- John Hughes and Bobby Lennox were both ruled. Lennox had a heavy cold and Hughes had damaged knee ligaments. In came Charlie Gallacher and Steve Chalmers to the League Cup Final team.
- On this night Dunfermiline went out of the Fairs Cup beaten on the away goal rule by Dinamo Zagreb, losing 2-0 in Zagreb having won 4-2 in Scotland. Also Kilmarnock beat Royal Antwerp 8-2 in the Fairs Cup on this night.
Review
Celtic hit six goals in the first half. Celtic were fitter, quicker and sharper in their play and showed no effects of the tough game against Rangers at the weekend. Charlie Gallacher went off after 25 minutes and was replaced by Jim Craig. Jimmy Johnstone got the first with a header from a Murdoch cross. Further goals followed from McBride, Chalmers and a second from McBride. The replacement of Gallacher altered the flow little. Auld and Chalmers added a further two goals before half time with Gemmell deflecting a shot past Simpson for Stirling Albion.
They only added a further goal – McBride's hatrick – in the second half and allowed Stirling to pull two goals back.
