Trivia
- Billy McNeill was fit again after his bout of 'flu. This was a 7:30 pm kick off game on a Monday night at Celtic Park.
- Jimmy Johnstone was very markedly dropped for this game. When asked about Johnstone's fitness when the team weas announced, Jock Stein very uncharacteristically went out of his way to say that Jinky was dropped and Brogan was the sub. This definetly was not a question of squad rotation.
- The second trophy of the season is in the bag.
- After the game Jock Stein railed against the team in the Celtic View. He was talking more about the League draw against St Mirren rather than this game, saying that the players thought they knew better than the people that set out the plans and put the tactics in place for the game. He promised to come down hard on offenders in the future. Players were meant to do what they were told. There was no doubt as to who was in charge.
Review
Despite all hopes that Partick Thistle might be at their best and offer up some kind of resistance this was another example of Celtic at their exemplary best overpowering the opposition through all aspects of their play. They were fitter, faster and more technical. Their dominance was such that Clark and Murdoch frequently joined the attack. By half an hour gone the game was over with Celtic 3-0 up and to an extent, cruising. Chalmers scored the first goal with a sclaffed cross-***-shot. Lennox's first goal came from and Charlie Gallacher free kick after John Clark was fouled. He scored two more, his second just two minutes later and his hatrick just before half time. The team appeared to go to sleep in the second half but they were still too good for the Jags.
Willie Thornton, Partick Thistle manager, "I was most impressed with Celtic's play. I watched them beat Stirling Albion 7-3 last week and they did a first class job as executioners in that game. They did the same to us last night."
