Review
This was by no means an easy game and Celtic had to fight back all the way against a determined Dunfermiline side winning only by a penalty in the 89th minute. Twice they were behind by two goals but they fought back and there determination paid off with Joe McBride snatching the win from the penalty spot. For the first half hour Dunfermiline were the better side but they failed to capitalise on their superiority or take any of the good chances they had – for the first time this season Celtic were matched and beaten in the start. Robertson and Delaney put the Pars two goals up. Bobby Murdoch snatched one back with a slice of luck only for Paton to keep the Pars out ahead by the two on 38 minutes. Jimmy Johnstone scored just before the interval to make it 3-2 to the Pars at half time.
The second half was just as exciting and after a whirlwind start from Celtic, Dunfermiline started to crank up the pressure again going ahead 4-2 with a goal from Alex Ferguson. Back came Celtic and as their superior fitness started to play it's role they gradually got on top with Auld scoring and McBride finally equalising. At all square at 4-4 with twenty minutes to play both sides went at it hammer and tongs. But the final word was McBride's when Celtic were awarded a penalty 1 minute from full time when Barry flicked a header from Chalmers over the bar with his hand.
As ever an insightful manager, Jock Stein had this to say after the game.
"I have a good memory. I remember the League Cup Final at Hampden well. On that day our forwards played very badly. It was the defence that saved us and took us to victory. So surely they are expected the attack to do a special job on occasions like Saturday……. Did you see a single one of our forwards bickering with the defenders when the goals were being lost? Did you see any of them losing heart?"
