- Bobby Murdoch, despite his legs being a mass of bruises after the attentions of Nantes in the European Cup game, was fit to play. Murdoch was also due to face the SFA Referees Committee on the Monday for a sending off and two cards.
- John hughes was also included in the party for this game having been assessed as ready to make his comeback from the knee injury that had kept him out since the League Cup final. He had been due to play in the Reserve game on the Friday night which was called off.
- Celtic played an unchanged team from the side that had defeated Nantes.Kilmarnock were also unchanged from their last game.
- Alec Wright, Partick Thistle's trainer, took over as manager at St Mirren.
- Six fans (including two women) were injured when a barrier collapsed after five minutes. They were taken to Kilmarnock infirmary. The barrier collapsed in the crowded enclosure opposite the main stand and dozens of fans ending face down on the track. The referee immediately stopped the game and officials rushed to give help. The injured were taken away on stretchers. The game was restarted after three minutes. There was a further incident at the start of the second half when youngsters spilled onto the track behind the Celtic goal. A number of youngsters were taken away for further attention.

Review
Celtic had most of the play but in the Killie (and Scotland) goalkeeper Bobby Ferguson, they found a player in inspired form. He made save after save, particularly in the first half to keep it goal-less. Billy McNeill was booked in the first half.
