- Bobby Murdoch duly completed his carpet standing in front of the SFA Referees Committee and found himself fined to the tune of £30 and a severe censure. He managed to avoid a suspension. He had his appeal against the caution in the European game against Zurich upheld but got the fine for his sending off in a league game. He was accompanied to the meeting by Jock Stein. - On the Monday Celtic stated that they had bid for an ‘Anglo-Scot’ – someone playing south of the border, and a forward at that. On the Tuesday night Willie Wallace was signed from Hearts for £30,000 . He had been unhappy at Hearts and had asked for a transfer and even been suspended by the club. Had he not been signed by Celtic he had planned to emigrate to Canada with his family. Wallace would be available for the next round of the European Cup but was ineligible for this one.
- Nantes arrived in Glasgow on the Monday evening and trained at Barrowfield on the Tuesday.
- Celtic initially named an unchanged side as did Nantes, but both teams were playing tactically in their line-ups and information given out to the Press. In the end McBride was left out with a knee injury and Charlie Gallacher preferred at inside right.
- Nantes player Jacques Simon tips Celtic to win the tournament.
- Ajax beat Liverpool 5-1 in Amsterdam on the same night in the European Cup.
Review
When Johnstone scored to make it 4-1 on aggregate in 13 minutes every Celtic fan expected Nantes to fold.
Instead they upped their game in their bright yellow shirts (The Canaries) and equalised with a fine goal by Georgin. Shortly after Simpson made a fine save from the same player and up front the Celtic players were constantly frustrated by the Nantes offside trap. As the teams left at half time the Celtic fans made it clear they were not happy.
As in the first leg Celtic grew stronger as they game wore on. Johnstone was a constant threat and he created two identical goals for Chalmers and Lennox from his service on the right wing.
Nantes were very complimentary after the game and they were impressed by Celtic’s work ethic and strength as a unit.

It took Celtic only 13 minutes to 4-1 (on aggregate) ahead. Johnstone cut through the Nantes defence and put Celtic one ahead in the match with a well placed ground shot.
Celtic did most of the attacking, but the forwards apparently missed ace goalscorer Joe McBride, absent because of leg strain, and were not moving with their usual fluency. And Nantes were obviously capable of scoring goals, if the steady Celtic defence cracked.
Seven minutes before half-time that crack appeared when Georgin scored to make the aggregate score 4-2. Georgin almost scored again but he was stopped by a great save from Celtic goalkeeper Ronnie Simpson. His goal was the first by a European side at Celtic Park since 1962, when Valencia drew 2-2.
The offside trap perplexed Celtic but in 56 minutes inside-forward Stevie Chalmers headed a fine second goal from a Johnstone cross.
Lennox made Celtic’s lead 3-1 and 6-2 on aggregate in the 78th minute.
