Trivia

  • Jock Stein flew on a scouting mission to Madrid to watch the play off between A|thletico Madrid and Vojvodina to see who would be Celtic’s opponents in the quarter final of the European Cup. Athletico were confident that they would be the team against Celtic. They lost a 2 goal lead to go down 3-2 to Vojvodina with two of the Yugoslav players being sent off by the Irish referee.
  • With Stein away on the Wednesday the Celtic staff were given the day off to go Christmas shopping.
  • Bent Martin, the goalkeeper Celtic bought from Aarhus, was transferred to Dunfermiline on the 23 December for £3500.
  • Kilmarnock progressed to the next round of the Fairs Cup with a 3-1 aggregate win after a bruising away leg to La Gantoise of Belgium, in which three players were sent off.
  • As usual the team news was held to before the game. Jimmy Johnstone was out with a cold. The front line was jiggled but the same team played as had faced Partick Thistle the week before.
  • This would be Joe McBride’s last game of the season. He would pick up a knee injury in training after Christmas which would mean he would miss the rest of the season (and sadly Lisbon).
  • At Celtic Park on the same day Celtic Reserves defeated Aberdeen Reserves 5-1. The Celtic scorers were Brogan, Macari, Connelly, Taylor and Hughes. The Celtic team was Fallon,Young, Brogan, Henderson, Craig, Hay, Macari, Connelly, Quinn, Taylor, Hughes. Sub McCarron.

Review

This was a frozen surface which resembled a skating ring. Snow fell throughout Scotland and though there was no snow here at the start, it was in the post and the surface was icy with strong winds. The snow duly made its appearance as the game wore on.
Celtic got the better of the conditions faster and scored first through Bobby Lennox. But Aberdeen quickly equalised through Melrose. Thereafter a thrilling game developed with both goalkeepers showing their merits. The Celtic defense which had seen some criticism in the last few games performed well with the half back line in particular singled out for praise. Aberdeen were able to match the speed of the Celtic attack and so a tight game developed between the sides with Aberdeen carefully using the offside trap.
