Trivia

  • Celtic decamped to Seamills for three days prior to the game. They returned on Wednesday and played a full practice match at Barrowfield. Jimmy Johnstone was out suffering from an ear infection. Bobby Lennox, with an ankle injury, was also rested. McBride was told to rest his knee after playing in the reserve cup tie the previous Wednesday.
  • Celtic fans learned the incredulous news at full time that Berwick Rangers had beaten Rangers 1-0 at Shielfield Park.
  • On the same day in the Reserve League Celtic lost 3-1 to Aberdeen. The Celtic scorer was Connelly.

Review

Murdoch opened the scoring with a characteristic cannon of a shot from over 20 yards. The second was of a similar character from Celtic's other net-burster, Tommy Gemmell. By 20 minutes with Celtic 2-0 up against Arbroath one might have thought that the urgency would go out of the play. But Chalmers added a third and Arbroath showed occasional neat touches of play with Simpson having to tip a ball over on 40 minutes. Bertie Auld added a fourth in the second half.
