Review
A big crowd were shocked to silence early when McKay’s shot was sliced by Tommy Gemmell past Simpson with just 28 seconds played. On eight minutes a Chalmers shot was grappled by the Queens keeper and Lennox went in only to be squeezed out by two Queens players. The referee called a penalty and Gemmell stepped up to fire home off the underside of the crossbar redeeming the earlier deflection. Queens were far from overawed by Celtic and contested every ball. A further penalty incident involving Wallace was waved away the referee instead giving an indirect free kick inside the box. On 23 minutes Chalmers put Celtic ahead with a goal made after some magnificent play by Bertie Auld. Queens fought back and pulled one back through Hopper to equalise. Wallace soon put the ‘tic back in front with an excellent headed goal and a cracker from Bobby Murdoch after good work by Jimmy Johnstone saw Celtic go in at half time with a 4-2 lead.
Forty seconds into the second half and Queens pulled another back to 4-3 when Hopper got his second with the Celtic defence looking flat footed and aghast. Queens pushed hard and Celtic reacted by upping the pace. Johnstone, Wallace and Chalmers all had chances to put the game safe but it took to six minutes from the whistle for Bobby Lennox to put the tie squarely beyond the amateurs.
In the last minute of the game Jimmy Johnstone and Hay became embroiled in an incident with it looking like Jinky trying to put the heid on the Queen’s Parki player. Both of them were booked.
Jinky’s misbehaving didn’t end there with the booking. He was ordered to remain behind after the game. A hastily convened Board of Directors meeting then pulled him up and he was immediately suspended for seven days for misconduct and withdrawn from all participation in games. This meant he would miss the English League – Scottish League game due on the Wednesday night at Hampden.
