Trivia

  • Jimmy Johnstone's suspension by the club after the previous Cup game against Queen's Park became all the news of the sports pages with almost everyone praising the club for it's action. Though suspended from all games for seven days and withdrawn from the Scottish League team he was allowed to train with the players during the week.
  • The draw for the semi final of the Scottish Cup was made with Celtic drawn at home against either Clyde or Hamilton Accies who needed a replay to decide who would go through.
  • McNeill, Clark, Gemmell and Chalmers were all in the Scottish League side that played the English League at Hampden on the Wednesday night losing 3-0. Bobby Lennox was reserve and as noted above Jimmy Johnstone had been withdrawn by the club.
  • Celtic announced that they would play Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the next season in a Challenge match at Celtic Park. Celtic had played Tottenham three times during the previous closed season when on tour in America.
  • As usual there was no team announcement prior to the game. Johnstone's suspension saw John Hughes moved to the right side with Charlie Gallacher playing inside of him. Bertie Auld dropped to the bench. Also Willie O'Neill came in at left back with Tommy Gemmell moving to the right side and Davie Cattanach dropped after a relatively poor showing against Queen's Park in the Cup tie. For Dunfermiline, Kerrigan made his debut after his recent move from Hearts, Alex Ferguson at inside left had recovered from an ankle knock on the Wedneasday and Jim Delaney at centre forward had just had four stitches removed from a facial injury.
  • The Reserves played Rangers Reserves on the Friday night in a Second XI Cup semi final.
  • Celtic played in all green change strip.
  • After this game one million spectators had come through the turnstiles at Celtic Park since the start of the season.

Review

Celtic went ahead in the fourth minute with an excellent Stevie Chalmers headed goal after great work from Willie Wallace operating on the right wing. Dunfermiline pulled level when Ferguson took advantage of a deflected Delaney shot and was able to prod home. But on two minutes Celtic took the lead again with a Tommy Gemmell penalty when Lennox went down somewhat softly in the area. The Dunfermiline players protested and Barry was booked for dissent. Not long before half time Willie Wallace added another to make it 3-1 to the Celts with a great shot after work from Chalmers.
The second half Celtic played with confidence and ability but could not put the ball past Martin in the Dunfermiline goal but three minutes from the whistle Alex Ferguson was allowed to advance on Simpson and bagged a second for the Pars.

With Rangers winning against Ayr Utd the Bears were still at the top of the table ahead only on the narrowest of goal averages, but Celtic still had a game in hand.
