- Part-time Clyde were 5/1 under dogs going into the game. However there were clear signs that Clyde would be no pushover and on the night Celtic beat Partick Thistle (the previous game) Clyde administered a defeat on Hibernian in a style that was almost as one-sided as the Thistle – Celtic game.
- Bobby Murdoch was still battling the ankle injury sustained against Hearts. After two sets of X-Rays he was back in training but would not be chanced if there was any possibility of breakdown. He was included in the party of 14 for the game.
- In the end Murdoch was not risked. Willie Wallace was left at right half with Bertie Auld returning to the inside right position and Charlie Gallacher dropping to the bench. For Clyde both Anderson and Gilroy were carrying injuries.
- Dukla Prague sent a representative to the game to spy on Celtic's play. after this game Jock Stein left to go and watch Dukla Prague play returning to Glasgow on the Monday night.
- In the League, Dunfermline won 1-0 at Ibrox against Rangers and this result virtually guaranteed Celtic another league title.With 5 games to play Celtic were two points in front with a game in hand.
- Celtic Reserves played Killie Reserves on the same day drawing 1-1. The team was Fallon, Brogan, O'Neill, Cattanach, Cushley, Hay, Taggart, Henderson, Quinn, Connelly, Taylor w sub McCarron.
Review
Celtic badly missed Murdoch in midfield and a troublesome wind made conditions difficult for both teams. The Celtic team lacked its usual rhythm and ability and found it hard to get going. Clyde gradually gained in confidence and played some neat football.
Celtic started into the wind and drizzle that continued through the entire game. They made heavy weather of it with previously surefire players making indidual mistakes that allowed Clyde good chances. Both Wallace for Celtic and McFarlane for Clyde were spoken to by the referee. Celtic's only threat looked to be McNeill's headers from corners.
Celtic redoubled their efforts in the second half playing with the wind but on 67 minutes Simpson made a one handed wonder save from a shot from Gilroy.
With four minutes remaining Celtic had valid claims for a penalty when Soutar blocked a net bound Johnstone shot with his arm
At full time the Celtic fans let the team know that they were not impressed with their efforts.
The replay would be on Wednesday night.
In the other semi final at Dens Park, Aberdeen went through against Dundee Utd from an own goal in seven minutes.
