Trivia

  • When the draw for the League Cup groups was made everyone rubbed there hands with glee to see this group. The police and SFA saw that it would necessarily mean another two Glasgow derbies and planned accordingly. The last real trouble had come at the League Cup final in October 1966 when Rangers supporters had invaded the pitch at Hampden when Celtic had tried to show the Cup to the Celtic end after their 1-0 win.
  • The usual pre-match warnings went out to both sets of fans. Anyone waving flags or offensive banners would be removed from the ground, and offensive language, swearing and carrying bottles (filled or otherwise) would see those in favour of such behaviour expelled from the ground.
  • Neither manager let on their team selections prior to arrival at the ground. Bertie Auld who had played part of the Dundee Utd game with an ankle knock recovered in time and in the end Jock Stein fielded an unchanged team with the Lisbon Lions but this time Charlie Gallacher was on the bench. Rangers played all their new signings – Penman (Dundee), Persson (Dundee Utd) and Alex Ferguson (Dunfermiline) in the front line and Sorensen (Morton) in goal.
  • Tommy Gemmell finally re-signed his contract after talks with both Bob Kelly and Jock Stein. There was never any chance of him NOT re-signing in reality – it was just a question of terms.
  • Celtic signed Bobby Murdoch's younger brother, Billy Murdoch, onto the groundstaff as a apprentice.
  • On the previous night in the Reserve League Cup Celtic beat Rangers 3-1 at Celtic Park. The Celtic scorers were Hughes and McMahon 2. John Hughes, who played in this game had to have 8 stitches in an ankle gash and was ruled out of the senior game.
  • An incredible crowd of 94,168 pack into Ibrox to watch this game.
  • Celtic let Reserve Tony Taylor leave for Morton where he inmmediately slotted into the first team. Taylor had been a valued player in the reserves but had little chance of stepping up to the first team competeing for a place against Lennox, Auld and Hughes.
  • Story from Lachie Mor on Celtic Underground re this game – 'The day after this game I was a bus conductor at Langside and we had a shop steward who was from the Highlands called Angus McLeod. He came in to the garage for mid morning break and asked me if I had been to Govan that day. I said that I hadn't and he said do you the paper boy who sells papers outside the subway. I said yes what about him? He said he is shouting 'Sensation sensation! European Cup champions held by local team'

Review

Rangers had most of the pressure throughout this game but Celtic showed the other side of their game which was the ability to defend well. Celtic came under pressure and were lucky not to give away a penalty when Jardine went sprawling in the penalty area after just four minutes. Craig made the tackle and the referee wasn't interested in Jardine's appeal! The Bhoys recovered from that and took the game to Rangers. Gemmell put Celtic in front from the penalty spot on 38 minutes when Smith pulled down Lennox in the box and Celtic went in 1-0 up at the interval.

The second half was mostly Rangers pressure. On 60 minutes Rangers were awarded a penalty. Penman took it and Simpson saved it. From then to the end the Celtic defense soaked up whatever Rangers could throw at them. But two minuites from time Rangers won a free kick about 25 yrads out and Penaman scored direct from the free, going from villain to hero.
A decent game played well with no trouble on or off the park.
