- The substitution of Chalmers in the second half brought a degree of controversy. The rules had been interpreted that the 12th man was there as a sub for an injured player. Jock Stein made his own interpretation of that saying that he was allowed to use 12 players and that there was no point in having 12 if he did not use them and it was within the rule. Chalmers was uninjured whyen subbed by Hughes, and was taken off toi save him for the League game the following weekend against Rangers.
Eleven miners died when fire broke out underground at the Michael's mine, East Wemyss, Fife during Friday night.
Review
A good start for Celtic in the League with all three goals scored in the first half. McMahon scored in the 13th minute and this was followed up by a brilliant goal from Lennox with a diving header of a Chalmers cross after the half hour. Bertie Auld, who had a brilliant game, scored a third just before half time from a Lennox pass. John Hughes came on in place of Chalmers for the second half.
McMahon played well combining with the more regular forwards in what was to an extent a scratch Celtic front line. Bertie Auld made the first goal spotting Chalmers free and his centre allowed McMahon to pass into the net. That the score remained at 3-0 in the second half was more down to the goalkeeping of Wright for Clyde.
