- Following the League Cup semi final against Morton on the Wednesday night Jimmy Johnstone found himself selected for the Scotland squad to face Ireland in Belfast despite having to face an SFA Disciplinary Committee on Monday following his sending off against St Johnstone. Also selected for Scotland were Simpson, Gemmell, and Murdoch with Wallace as travelling substitute.
- There were no injuries to account for in the Celtic ranks.
- Davie McParland was sent off somewhat harshly.
Review
Celtic continued with the same level seen in the last two games with the same side. They hrtled into attack against the Maryhill Magyars right from the first whistle. But Thistle had their moments too in the first encounters. With the Thistle captain McParland sent off on 30 minutes Celtic played most of the game against a 10-man Thistle. Wallace and McParland had tangled in the 30th minute and when it was sorted out referee Kellock took McParland to one side booked him and then sent him off. If anything with McParland off Celtic relaxed and were more complacent. Wallace, Auld and Lennox all had good chances to put Celtic in front but fluffed their chances. In the end it was Billy McNeill who opened the scoring with a shot rather than a header just befor the interval.
In the second half Bobby Lennox went to town scoring four goals with Thistle playing against the wind.
Twenty minutes from time Jim Brogan came on as a sub for John Clark.
