Trivia

  • An incredible rammy broke out between the Scottish League and Celtic. The League categorically stated that any Celtic player picked to play for the Scottish League against the English League on March 20th in Middlesbrough should not play for Celtic in their Friendly game in Dublin two nights before. Bob Kelly took serious umbrage at this. Seven Celtic players had been named for the Scottish League – Simpson, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Johnstone, Hughes and Lennox. Over 45,000 tickets had already been sold for the Dublin game on the basis that the majority of the Lisbon Lions would play. Celtic chose to ignore the League and said that the seven would travel to Dublin.
  • A bid had come in from St Johnstone to take Joe McBride to Muirton Park. McBride was told of the bid and said that he would stay and fight for his place at Celtic. The fact though that Celtic were prepared to countenance McBride leaving showed that he was down the immediate pecking order of strikers.
  • It was announced that Bertie Auld would be out for the rest of the season. His knee injury was down to a cartilage problem and he needed the operation. It would be very unliekely that he returned before the end .
  • Apart from the restoration of Jim Craig at right back and Willie O'Neill dropping out the team with a leg strain, the team was the same that had put a total of 10 goals past Kilmarnock and Aberdeen.
  • Hearts beat Rangers 1-0 at Tynecastle in a Scottish Cup replay, and in Poland Manchester Utd lost 1-0 but went through to the semi finals of the European Cup 2-1 on aggregate.

Review

It took Celtic 22 minutes to get the hang of Airdrie and in that time they could have gone two goals behind. That Airdrie didn't take their chances and Celtic did was the story of the game. Bobby Lennox opened the scoring with a header closely followed with Wallace's first of another hatrick. Jimmy Johnstone displayed the full mastery of his talents. John Hughes was strangely ineffective and was subbed for the second half by Steve Chalmers. Celtic's half backs were as usual dominant with Jim Brogan looking good.
