Trivia
- Gemmell took a leg knock against Morton in the midweek game and was not considered fit enough – one of the very few games that Tommy missed since he started as a first team regular. Fallon continued in goal. Jock Stein gave high praise indeed to the eleven that played against Morton, saying that they gave the best performance of the season so far. Simpson was fit but played for the Reserves.
- On the 30th UEFA announced that all the East European clubs would be withdrawn and placed in a further selection against each other. Celtic had indeed protested following the invasion of Czechoslovakia. However UEFA's decison looked like a complete fudge as there was no account of what would happen in the second round. The practical outcome for Celtic was that they would now would face St Etienne. With this fudge by UEFA it looked probable that the East European clubs would withdraw.
- On the same day Celtic Reserves were at home to Partick Thistle Reserves in the Reserve League Cup. Celtic won the match 12-0. The scorers were McBride 4, Macari 4, Auld 2 and Wilson 2. The Celtic team was Simpson, McGrain, Gorman, Dalglish, Hay, Clark, Wilson, McMahon, McBride, Macari, Auld. Sub McKellar.
Review
Celtic rounded off their League Cup qualifying games with a resounding win against Partick Thistle. Straight from the kick off Lennox went through the middle before releasing to Hughes and when his shot came off the legs of the Thistle goalkeeper there was the Buzzbomb to tap home. The second goal, a fortuitous own goal came about from pressure from the forwards and Cumming put through his own net. 2-0 up with ten minutes gone, the Bhoys went to town in the second half with Bobby Lennox eventually ending with five goals.
