Trivia1968 Celtic v Aberdeen

  • The young team fielded in the week in the League Cup against Hamilton proved to be a one-off and Celtic revereted to the number one selection with George Connelly coming back in for Chalmers and Wallace at centre forward. Murdoch, McNeill and Johnstone were all fit again and played.
  • On the same day at Pittodrie Celtic Reserves defeated Aberdeen Reserves 4-1. The Celtic scorers were McBride 2, Macari and Cattanach. The Celtic team Fallon, McGrain, O'Neill, Cattanach, Hay, Clark, Gallagher, McBride, Quinn, McMahon, Macari. Sub Murdoch.

Review

Celtic got off to a great start with Connelly getting the opener with his first goal for the club on two minutes with a shot from 35 yards. Aberdeen equalised through ex-Partick Thistle player Tommy Rae with a good goal. The game then followed an even contest with Aberdeen contesting every ball and both sides having opportunities to go ahead. But in the second half Lennox stole a goal when the Aberdeen keeper dropped the ball and Lennox stole in to claim it and netted with Clark trying to pull Lennox' jersey off his back. Despite the Aberdeen players protest (they were convinced Bobby Lennox punched the ball out of Clark's hands) the goal stood.
