Trivia
- Following the draw which made this replay necessary, Jock Stein conducted an in-depth investigation with the players on the Monday following the game at Firhill.
- An unchanged team for Celtic took the park for the 7:30 pm Wednesday night game. The winners were drawn to meet either Motherwell or Clyde away – they also had to replay – in the second round. They played on the Tuesday night with Clyde winning 2-1 and the second round tie at Shawfield was immediately made an all-ticket game.
- Nine Celts were chosen for the Scotland World Cup squad. These were Simpson, Craig, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Lennox, Hughes, Johnstone, Wallace.
- Some reports credit Thistle's goal to Gemmell OG.
- Thistle's manager at this time was the ex-Rangers manager Scot Symon.
Review
Before the game Jock Stein said that they had let Partick Thistle off in the previous game by going to sleep – they would not make the same mistake twice. Not only did the Bhoys not go to sleep this time round but they put the Maryhill Magyars to the sword with every forward scoring at least once and the defense chipping in too. This was dominance not so far seen this season. The passing was fast and accurate. Everyone knew their place and role and the Jags did not have a clue to counter such total football. By half time they were 4-0 down
