Trivia
- The game had been arranged when the second game in France against Marseille fell through. The thinking behind the game with Carlisle was that a very good friendly had been played against them the previous season and that it would be an easy away day for the travelling Celtic support.
- 15,000 Celtic fans travel to Carlisle.
- Cumbrian police draft in 150 extra police for the occasion.
- 18 Celtic fans arrested on the M74 for trying to thumb lifts to Carlisle. Buses were told to drop fans at the carlisle ground which was outside the centre to prevent excessive drinking in the town prior to the game.
- Jimmy Johnstone was included in the Celtic pool. But Jim Craig was out having damaged a knee in the St Etienne game. John Hughes was also fit and in the party. Also travelling were Davie Cattanach, George Connelly, Steve Chalmers and Bertie Auld.
- Carlisle who were in the Second Division had already had a good result in pre-season beating Hearts 5-0. At left half for Carlisle was Willie O'Neill who had transferred to Carlisle at the end of the last season.
Review
Celtic played well but again were unlucky and somewhat profligate in front of goal. They had plenty of chances to go ahead in the first half but failed to take them. When they weren't hitting the bar or uprights or firing over they found the Carlisle keeper in great form. Carlisle too were not without their chances even if they did not have the overrall skill of the Celtic side.
Celtic brought on Jimmy Johnstone and George Connelly at the start of the second half. Jinky ran rings around the Carlisle defense but still the Bhoys failed to put the ball away. In the 73rd minute the inevitable happened and ex-Airdrie man Tommy Murray broke away to score with a 20 yard shot.
