- Bobby Murdoch had been recovering from the hip injury picked up at Ibrox but after a fitness test he was ready for this game. And back to unto the fold came Jinky. Having served out his time in the Reserves Jock Stein realised that this was too important a game to keep the genius of the wing out. Jim Brogan dropped to the bench and George Connelly went to the Reserves. Both managers played their cards close to their chests as Rangers too had their injury concerns.
- This match kicked off at 7:45 pm despite the tickets showing otherwise, as opposed to the more usual 7:30.
- Gemmell's winner puts Celtic through and Rangers out.
- In the aftermath of this defeat (and the realisation that they were probably out for asnother year) Rangers lodged a protest with the SFA over the standard of refereeing, claiming that John Hughes should have been ordered off for dropping Willie Johnston in an off-the-ball incident.

Review
A bad error by Rangers goalkeeper Neef allowed Tommy Gemmell in to head home when the keeper dropped the ball from a Bobby Murdoch free kick.
This was a hard fought game with neither side giving any quarter with some hard tackling going in. John Hughes got the bereak of the game when , not long after he had been booked for a foul on Jardine, he kneed Johnston in an off-the-ball incident. Johnston went down like a man hit by sniper fire and the linesman called the referee over. Whether the linesman had seen the incident or not, Hughes got away with it.
