Trivia
- After the Airdrie game there were a number of walking wounded. Hood, Lennox, McNeill, Hughes and Murdoch all required treatment after the game, with Bobby Murdoch in particular, with a re-occurrence of the hip injury that had already kept him out. Hughes, with a leg injury was also doubtful. On the Wednesday it became clear too that Lennox would not be a starter.
- Instead Jock Stein sent Lennox, Hughes and Murdoch to Easter Rd. to watch Hibernian against Aberdeen on a spying mission.
- Tommy Gemmell missed a penalty
Review
Celtic qualified for the quarter finals of the League Cup with this 5-2 win against Raith Rovers at Starks Park. Celtic were 2-0 up at the break after starting at a furious pace. Stevie Chalmers got the first with a great bit of skill and a deadly finish. Then Harry Hood hit a tremendous strike from out near the touchline for the second.
In the second half Jim Brogan and harry Hood added two more before Raith roused themselves and struck back with two good goals. Celtic saw the danger ( and the potential anger of the boiss) and upped the anti and Steve Chalmers added a fifth with a neat bit of skill from a Gemmell pass. Before that Chalmers had been brought down in the area and Gemmell stepped up for the penalty which was saved by Reid in goal.
