- The first game of the League season 1969-70 saw Celtic at home to St Johnstone.
- Gala day at Parkhead as Lady Kelly (wife of chairman Sir Robert) unfurls the league flag. This is the fourth consecutive year that Lady Kelly has performed this ceremony.

- St Johnstone under manager Willie Ormond are impressive. They were at that p[oint the highest scoring team in the British Isles with 22 goals (Celtic were the second highest with 21 goals). The afternoon was set to be a cracker of a game with the fans happy having qualified for the quarter finals of the League Cup, having knocked out the perennial rivals in the process, Flag Day and a chance to hail Bob Kelly's knighthood.
- Lennox, Hughes and Murdoch were still out injured. Added to that list was Bertie Auld who had picked up an injury in the League Cup game against Raith Rovers. In came Jimmy Johnstone from the start with George Connelly moving inside one and Stevie Chalmers taking the left wing berth.
- The resrves played St Johnstone at Muirton Park winning 4-1. The team was Simpson, McGrain, Gorman, Dalglish, Hay, Cattanach, Mcbride, White, Quinn, Davidson, Wilson w Clark as sub.
Review
On a warm, shirt-sleeved day 60,000 fans saw a great game on a gala day.
St Johnstone took the lead countered 15 minutes later by a Steve Chalmers equaliser from a Wallace pass. At half time it was even at one a piece.
St Johnstone went ahead in the second half with good attacking football. Back came Celtic, with notable good work from Jinky and Wallace headed the equaliser in the 63rd minute
