Trivia
- The speculation in the papers that Jock Stein was about to step down to be replaced by Bob Shankly amounted to nothing more than pure speculation and after appearing in one evening story vanished without a trace.
- Celtic named an unchanged side for the game, the only doubt being who would be named as substitute with Davie Hay and Tommy Callaghan both travelling.
- Willie Wallace and Willie Renton were sent off.
Review
Described by the Herald as 'an exhibition of spirefulness' in which 'both clubs reputation for sportsmanship was damaged'.
The first real attack came from Celtic and saw a Bobby Lennox header well saved. Dunfermiline then ripped up the park and a Mitchell cross was swept home by Gardner on ten minutes. Then came the incident between Renton and Wallace – a private stramash between the two drawing in both sets of players and leading to both of them seeing the early bath. That incident appeared to up the anti for the rest of the game. Ten minutes later in a similar move that had led to the Pars first goal, Craig ended up touching Gardner's shot past Fallon to put them 2 goals up.
In the second half Celtic fought back and Tommy Gemmell scored with a marvellous 30 yard shot said to be one of the greatest goals ever seen at East End Park. But Deunfermiline held on and marshalled their defense well.
