- No less than six changes to the team that had been held to a 3-3 draw by Ayr Utd on the Wednesday night. When the squad was announced there were few explanations given. Back in came Ronnie Simpson on his 39th birthday for John Fallon. Out went youngsters Davie Hay and Kenny Dalglish, rested with Jim Craig and Jim Brogan reinstated. Billy McNeill was replaced at the last minute, a victim of 'flu.
- On the previous night Celtic Reserves beat Airdrie Reserves 7-0. The Celtic scorers were Davidson 3, Macari 2, Wilson and W. Murdoch.
- Ronnie Simpson was made captain to celebrate his 39th birthday.
- Hughes, Gemmell, Johnstone, McNeill and Lennox were included in the Scotland squad to face West Germany in a World Cup qualifier away on 22nd October.
- Jim Craig and Willie Wallace were up in front of the beaks of the Referees Committee – Craig for his sending off against Rangers and Wallace for his sending off against Dunfermiline. Wallace got a four week suspension whilst Renton, the Dunfermiline player sent off at the same time got a three week suspension. Jim Craig escaped with a fine of £20.

A hard game with three Airdrie players finding their way into the referee's book. Played in good conditions Celtic looked at odds with the game and never really got going despite winning by two goals..
