Trivia
- The Celtic players had reported for pre-season training on the 14th July. Willie Fernie was in charge of training the youths set up at the club.
- Over the closed season Tommy Gemmell had withdrawn his transfer request with Jock Stein saying that the club had received no formal offers. Gemmell had also been voted the best left back in the world in a poll during the closed season.
- Celtic took a party of 16 to Ireland for the game. The full party included Auld and Wallace.
- Evan Williams remained in Glasgow with the other Celtic players. Williams had injutred his hand during the pre-season training but the injury was not serious.
Review
The veteran Limerick goalkeeper held firm for 25 minutes before Tommy Gemmell hit a trademark cannon past him. Thereafter it was all Celtic.
