Trivia
- A combined select in respect to raise funds following the Ibrox Stadium disaster. (see link)
- Jimmy Johnstone had to withdraw with a cut foot.
- £45,000 is raised on the night at Hampden Park.
- Sadly the fans don’t mix and there is chanting from both the Rangers end and Celtic end of the ground.
- Even sadder, in a test case for damages brought by the widow of a deceased victim Rangers tried to have: a) all of the disaster fund amounting to £358,000, or b) the £50,000 (approx. 14% of the total) they had paid into it, used as part of any potential damages awarded against them. In the event they were found liable for damages and their arguments regarding the Lord Provost’s Disaster Fund monies were dismissed by the judgement of Sheriff James Irvine Smith. Athough counsel for Rangers stated at the time that they wished to appeal the Sheriff’s judgement, they did not, and later “accepted the soundness of that decision and the basis on which it was reached”. Their only appeal was in relation to a small technical matter regarding expenses with Wilson of Langside, the Sheriff Principal of Glasgow & Strathkelvin. [See Match Pictures].
