Review
Celtic 1-0 Dunfermline
Wallace 49
Celtic fans looked on in dismay as Bobby Murdoch was carried off injured after only 13 minutes after a heavy challenge from Dave McNicoll. The Celtic fans reacated badly to the defender's challenge and their outrage grew after referee Bob Henderson did not even book McNichol. Murdoch had disclocated his shoulder and was doubtful for the fortcoming Euro ties against Ajax.
The game descended into a physical contest after that and Murdoch's replacement, Hay, revelled in the cup tie atmosphere. Jimmy Johnstone was lucky not to go into the book after a foul on John Lunn and for giving the referee a piece of his mind.
Ex Celts Cushley and McBride worked hard for Athletic and Tommy Callaghan, on the Celtic left side, was in direct opposition to his brother Willie.
Wallace bravely scored Celtic's winner when he launched himself at the ball to head home after Callaghan's shot had spun wildly into the air after striking Cushley.
McNichol, ironically, was carried off injured and replaced by Robertson much to the derision of the home crowd. With five minutes left Joe McBride had an appalling miss from close range.
Jim Brogan was Celtic's best man and was said to be in the running for a Scotland place.
At the end of the month it was all square at the top of the table with Celtic in second place two points behind Aberdeen but with a game in hand.
