Trivia

  • With the League Cup lost to Partick Thistle the papers were full of how Celtic were 'vulnerable' and up for grabs from whichever team was ready to push them.
  • Jock Stein reacted to the defeat and went into the market signing goalkeeper Denis Connaghan from St Mirren, despite Evan Williams having played well in conceding four goals to Thistle. It is possible that following St Mirren's excellent but losing performance against Celtic in the League Cup semi final, that negotiations to sign the keeper were begun then. This made 5 keepers on the books the others being Williams, Gordon Marshall Senior, John Fallon and Tom Lally.
  • It was reported that Motherwell's centre forward Dixie Deans had put in a request for a transfer. So far no offers had been received for him.
  • Stein makes four changes from Saturday's LCF debacle. In came debutee Connaghan for Evan Williams, McNeill was fit again with Jim Brogan missing out to the subs bench and with Jimmy Johnstone injured in came Lennox.
  • Tommy Callaghan at outside left for Celtic lines up in direct opposition to his brother Willie at right back.
  • Murdoch was badly injured during the game and would be out until after the New Year recovering from strained knee ligaments.

Review

Celtic fans take a great deal of credit for getting behind their team when things were not going well and they were 1-0 down.

McNeill equalised with a powerful shot after McGarr dropped a high cross and late on Lennox finished well after Brogan and Macari had combined to set him clear on goal. His goal was due reward for having hit the woodwork three times in the second half.

McNeill's performance showed how badly the side missed him four days previously at Hampden in the 1-4 defeat to Partick.
