Trivia
- Wednesday night replay at Hampden following the borefest draw on the Saturday when Dundee stuck firmly behind the ball.
- The only change from the first game saw Bobby Lennox dropping out with a groin strain and Jimmy Johnstone starting with Harry Hood on the bench, having recovered from the cold that saw Jinky take the sub spot in the first game.
- Celtic deservedly blitz Dundee in extra time after another 90 minutes of Dundee defensive football.
Review
Dundee continued with their borefest tactics which had made the draw in the first game a non-event for the 90 minutes of the replay.
Celtic eventually broke Dundee’s resolve with three goals in extra time. Dundee, who had beaten Dunfermline 3-0 in a previous round, never looked capable of troubling Celtic. Only when Stein switched Hay to defence and Connelly into midfield did Celtic click with Connelly instigating their best moves.
Jinky Johnstone was the main man again with two of the goals. His first came when Dalglish steered the ball into his path from a long kick out and Jinky did the rest. Dalglish got the second a minute later from a well worked corner routine between Johnstone and Tommy Callaghan which saw Callaghan’s shot parried to the Dalglish who put the ball away. In the second period of extra time McGrain took the ball forward and played a cute ball inside for Jinky to take on and shoot from a sharp angle.
It was what the Bhoys deserved and justice for Dundee for their dull tactics.
