Review
Before the game Liverpool manager Bill Shankly, who was a guest of the club, was presented with a gift to commemorate his 15th anniversary as Liverpool manager. Shankly was overcome at this and as the Jungle chanted his name it took Jock Stein to come out and playfully usher him from the pitch so that the game could start.
The South Americans were clearly an elegant team but they were outplayed by Celtic on the night. Celtic played a tight game holding onto the ball. Lamas was effectively controlled by George Connelly, who had a great game. Hunter also did his part making three great saves in the early part of the game when Penarol were more in it. The whole Celtic defense played well.
Celtic's first came from the penalty spot Lennox putting away the spot kick after Dixie Deans had been impeded by the goalkeeper. Seven minutes into the second half Dalglish neatly chipped the keeper to make it 2-0. The third goal was made by Lennox who passed the ball back to Deans who slotted the ball home into an empty goal. Penarol pulled back a consolation goal back just before the end.
