Trivia

  • The situation between the club and David Hay appeared to be deadlocked with the player not turning up for training, the interested clubs disenchanted with Celtic's negotiation on the transfer and everything seemingly in a muddle. Hay actually wanted to stay but Celtic would not increase the terms of his contract to what he demanded, therefore he was on the transfer list and what itr would take for a club to acquire his services appeared to change all the time.
  • David Hay's big friend at the club, George Connelly was also again absent though he had been declared ready by the club. Connelly had 'disappeared' but on the Tuesday the club were forced to admit that though he was 'missing' and not included in the squad for the game he had not been suspended or sanctioned by the club. He had missed training and failed to turn up since the Friday before the Partick Thistle game. It did transpire however that the club had suspended David Hay for breach of contract.
  • Jimmy Johnstone came back in from the cold and Jim Brogan returned.
  • This was the second leg of the Second Round tie with Celtic 3-2 up from the first leg.
  • Game kicked off at 1.30pm on a Wednesday afternoon due to electricity rationing during the State of Emergency declared by the government after the coal and power disputes and fuel shortage.
  • Only most diehard Celtic fans travel after having to leave Glasgow at 7 on a work day.

Review

This was a tight drab affair which was full of stoppages and fouls.
Celtic looked content to sit on their lead and attack on the break although they did miss the presence of both Connelly and Hay in the side. Even so, the defense was well marshalled and Aberdeen failed to break it down.
Jimmy Johnstone came on for Deans after 20 minutes when Deans had to go off with a back injury. This upped the ante as Jinky started to receive the hacking and he retailiated on the quiet. Finally Willie Miller was the first to go in the book. Graham would join him as would Jim Brogan for not retiring the 10 yds at a free kick. It was that kind of game.

Rangers played out a 0-0 draw with Hibernian to go through 2-0 on aggregate making it an all Glasgow semi final and Dundee and Kilmarnock in the other semi.
